Safety and limits
A fire blanket works by cutting off air to a small fire. It is for fires that are just starting: a pan, a grill, a waste bin, or clothing on fire.
- If a fire is spreading or the room is filling with smoke, get out, close the door behind you and call 911.
- Never pour water on a grease fire.
- Lay the blanket over the fire. Do not throw it. Turn off the heat if you can and leave the blanket in place until everything is cool.
- A fire blanket is single use. Replace it after a fire.
- EV and vehicle blankets contain a fire around a vehicle. They do not put out a lithium-ion battery fire. Train before you deploy one.
- Fire resistant bags and covers buy time. They do not guarantee that contents survive.
